Question about converter boxs and recption with trees around?

i have a converter box hooked up to a antenna outside it stands about 18 feet high it will work once in awhile not very often will it pick up and channels with the converter box. also i have woods all over where i live does that have anything to do with and the closest big city is 120 miles away

I'm surprised you get anything from 120 miles.  A digital signal is all or nothing.  You don't get a snowy or noisy signal like you would with analog.  If your antenna isn't very big you could try a bigger one.  You could also try an amplifier and see if that helps.  I'd recommend you get a better one, not a cheap one as they often add to the problem rather than solve anything.  

    Do you know if there are any of the low power translators in your area?  A translator is set up by the TV station to fill in weak or distant areas.  Unfortunately, translators aren't typically being switched to digital yet.  They will be, but they're lower on the priority list.
