I am looking up information about the California School for the deaf in Fremont, california. I was wondering if people HAVE to be deaf to attend there? How much does it cost/tuition? And how is education taught there (oral, total communication; signs used?)

thank you

  2. If it is like other deaf schools then YES you would need to be deaf. Costs vary and education would be taught using American Sign Language. Although there are two types of sign language, American sign language is by far the most widely used.

If you are interested in learning sign language you would be able to take a course through your local college or adult education center.

CSDF is part of the state schools system. It offers both day and residential programs.Kids are admitted after it is determined a) the child has a significant hearing loss b) the public school IEP team decides a day/residential program is in the child's best interest based on several criteria, no only hearing loss.

Referrals are made  for such reasons as program placement concerns, lack of student progress, behavioral problems, determination of most appropriate mode of communication, specific educational/learning problems or requests of educational recommendations.

"The Admissions Department assists local school districts and parents with applications to attend the California School for the Deaf, Fremont.  Applications are supplied upon request and the Admissions Staff works with the school district and parents to collect comprehensive information which is then summarized and presented to a multi-disciplinary team of staff.  The staff review the information and determine if an appropriate assessment space is available to meet the educational needs of the applicant.  The admissions department will register families and assist them in issues that may come up during assessment for placement.  The admissions department also maintains ongoing communication with the local school district to provide updates about the applicant while being assessed."

  4. You have to be "legally" deaf. This may not mean profoundly deaf. Tuition is usually paid for through the public school system. It depends on the age on how they are taught. Sign language is always used. Other means of communication are sometimes taught.
