Question about detasselling?

I've never done it before and need to know some things about it. What do we do? How do they assign when we work? What do we bring and where do we keep it? What should I wear?

I haven't heard anything from Pioneer about when we start. I was wondering when I would hear from them. I live in Southeast Iowa and wanted to know when we might start.

  1. I remember doing this when I was a teenager.

The thing at the top of the cornstalk is the tassel, which has pollen to germinate the corn.  By taking the tassels off the some (usually 4 out of every 6 rows of corn) they create a new type of corn.

They call a day or two before you are needed, which depends on the tassels about ready to pollenate.  Considering all the flooding I have heard about there may not be much of call for detasselling corn this year.

We usually were required to bring lunch since we usually ate in the field.  Wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt since the leaves on the cornstalk can cut you fairly easily.
