Question:

Question about early separation?

Hi, my fiance was in the Navy for about 6 months before being discharged during A-School with the recommendation of a psychiatrist due to recurring panic attacks. He got an RE-4 Code but has no desire to rejoin the military anyway... his separation code was KFV, unqualified for active duty - other. I believe it was a general discharge under honorable conditions. Can anyone tell me how difficult it will be for him to get a job at this point? He is applying with the US Postal Service - how much of a chance does he have of getting a job there? Thanks in advance.

  1. He may never get a federal job with an RE4 code. Worth a try but they will investigate that code. Only apply if his situation has stabalized with help of Adavan or other perscription.

  2. Most civilian Federal jobs require that applicants who want veterans' preference serve at least 3 years active service.

However, in the real world his RE-4 would not matter. Many employers don't bother to check military status because they want someone who can do their job.

My company has hired former servicemembers who were OTH discharge and they are doing just fine.

He will be ok if he sticks with the private and civilian portions of government. If he wants to pursuit law enforcement, it may be a little bit more difficult.
