my husband was in emergency leave from his basic training due to a death in the family.. he only had 3 days to stay with his family and he missed his first flight back to boot camp because the lieutenant didn't specify on the time the flight left.. so when they arranged a second flight he ended up missing it too because he got there a little late and the flight was overbooked.. will his lieutenant and drill sergeants get on his case about missing his flights and if so what can they do to him? hes had a tough couple of days since his father died and maybe he just didn't have the energy to wake up on time.. i don't know but i hope they let him off a little easy and can cut him some slack.. what do you think?

  1. Why couldn't your husband check his own itinerary?  His leadership was trying to do him a favor.  He will no longer graduate on time or with his unit.

  2. I am quite surprised how the command purchased a flight for your husband. Emergency leave does not constitute funded travel. The fact that the LT got pissed is an understatement due to the fact he missed more than one flight. You stated he got there late and missed the flight. Not the LT's fault. There are only so many nice things you can do for an individual before you start feeling like you are being taken advantage of. I would counsel him and let the Chief deal with any other issues. Consider yourself fortunate that he was able to make it home during intensive training. It seems to me like he might have trouble in the military in the future

  3. It shows very poor leadership and initiative that your husband didn't bother to check his itinerary. It's not the LT's fault that your husband is having a bad time. Imagine if you had given someone money to catch TWO flights and they missed BOTH. Regardless of circumstances, you'd want your money back, you'd probably be pretty pissed. Here you are, going out of your way to help someone, and they instead just gaff you off because they're too lazy, sad, or pre-occupied to look at a piece of paper.

While it's very, very sad that someone in his family died (my condolences, for sure), what does that say about him in times of crisis? I'm sure they will probably be easy on him, but they may actually require that he pays back those flights...they ain't free. If he gives them attitude or excuses, they also have the option to NJP him (punish him) for going AWOL/UA (not being where he should have been).

EDIT: If you paid for the tickets, he wouldn't have to owe any money, and if it was same-day, minimal problems would happen, if any. It just sounded like he was just slacking off and the LT was trying to help him out.
