  1. To be considered independent by Dept of Education standards, one of the following will need to apply:

    24 years old

    Married

Has a child who receives at least half their support from him

Has a dependent who receives at least half their support from him

Veteran of the Armed forces or currently on active duty

Enrolled in  a Master's or PhD program

Both parents deceased or a ward of the court until 18th bday

If one of those qualifications apply to him, then he will be independent, but not before.

Good luck to you and your son

Notice it doesn't matter where he lives, who claims or doesn't claim him on any tax form, or even if you are going to help him pay.
