Question about fire bellied newts?

Am wondering can fire bellied newts drown? Or do they have gills so they can breathe under water because one of my newts died under water and am wondering is it because he drowned?

yes they can drown they need an area they can get out of the water. if they dont they tend to tire of constantly having to swim to the surface and they drown

because it may not have been because of this u need to remove your newts and completely clean your enclosure and everything in it with an amphibian safe disinfectant and rinse every thoroughly afterwards and keep a very close eye on the others for the next few months
