  1. you have four downs on offense

(that means you can run four plays with the ball)

if you pick up a first down, the four downs start all over again.

    Touchdown-6 pts

    PAT- 1or 2 pts

    Field Goal- 3 pts

    Safety - 2 pts

Each team plays 16 games (not including preseason or playoffs)

    there are 32 teams

Football is only shown on Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Saturday

    hope this helped :)

  2. Guess I could copy and paste the NFL hand book but I dont know how much space yahoo allows...

Just watch the game and ask your dad whats up.. He might get a kick out of teaching his lil girl about football.

Also.. forgot to add.. no matter what he tells you Dallas is the greatest franchise in history...

  3. The best thing you can do is sit down and keep watching until you know the game. I'm not gonna type the whole thing to you. some other idiots already wasted their time doing that.

  4. most games are on sunday 1 game is always on monday sometimes there are games on thursday and saturday. there is an "offense" which tries to get down field by running or passing the ball and score a touchdown which is worth 6 points. after the touchdown a kicker tries to kick it through the yellow thing called "goalposts" and if he makes it through the offense gets 1 more point  . The "defense" just tries to stop them. there are 32 teams 2 conferences called the AFC and NFC. 12 teams get to the playoffs (6 from each side).  the final 2 teams (1 from each conference) play in the championship game called the super bowl.

  5. When I was little, I never understood football. It's one of those sports you've just got to get used to, and then eventually understand it.

But to summarize it, in an NFL football game, there are 4 quarters, each quarter being 15 minutes long. After 4 quarters, the team with the most points wins. You can get points from a touchdown (this is the most common way, and it's the thing you most want), a field goal, or a safety. I'll explain each of these.

For a team to score a touchdown, a player with the football needs to reach the other team's end zone. To get there, they can either run the ball or pass the ball. If a touchdown is scored, the team gets 6 points, and they get to kick a short field goal worth an extra 1 point (the kickers almost always scores that extra 1 point).

For a team to score a field goal, a team's kicker must kick the football through the uprights. If they succeed, the team gets 3 points.

For a team to score a safety, the defense must tackle an opposing player in their own end zone. This gives 2 points to the team, and is very rare.

Overall in football, you get 4 chances to reach 10 yards, and the team with the most points wins. There are a lot of other rules to the game, but these are the basics.

  6. its on pretty much all day sunday..32 teams and theres only 16 games + playoffs...which is low compared to other sports.

im guessing ur looking for a simple answer so..

u drive down the field and try to get in that "box" lolz

  7.      The rules for american football (as opposed to soccer, canadien football or aussie rules).

The field is 50 yards wide and 120 yards long. The middle 100 yards are called the field of play (most plays occur there). There are goal lines at either side of the 100 yards. An additional ten yards after the goal lines are called the end zones. Goal posts rise above the far end of the end zone. They are usually curved to lean over the end lines to reduce the chance of players running into them.

One side is the offense, the other side is the defense. The offense is trying to score, and the defense is trying to prevent it. A ball crossing the goalline forward is called a touchdown. Usually this is by the offense running the ball over the goalline or throwing the ball into the endzone. However, the defense can return a fumble or interception for a touchdown as well. Interceptions and fumbles are called turnovers when they lead the other team to have the ball (it is turned over).

Touchdowns are worth six points. After a touchdown, a team amy attempt to try for extra points. Extra point attempts start at the defense two yard line. Kicking the ball through the uprights is worth one point, and running/throwing the ball over is worth two points. It is much more difficult to make a two point conversion...

Another means of scoring is called a field goal. Kicking the ball through the opposing uprights is a field goal. This is worth three points. Failing to make the field goal generally turns the ball over to the opponent.

There are specific rules on how many players are on the field (11), and where some can be. The offense (only) must place seven players on the line of scrimmage; within one yard of where the ball is placed. The inside five players are called the offensive line. The outside players used to be called the ends: split end and tight end- depending how far away from the offensive line they were. Now split ends are called wide outs or wide receivers. Four players are in the back field. These can be slot back (wide receivers), quarterback (usually right behind the center), full back (sometimes called blocking back), and halfback (tailback, running back, factor back). Lots of terms vary because of the specific formation being used. Eventually, you will catch on.

The offense has four downs to either score or gain ten yards. If they gain ten yards, it is called a first down. If they fail to gain ten yards after three downs, a team will generally punt the ball. This is a special kick which gives the ball to the defense where the kick lands, although a defender can return the ball if he grabs it.

Penalties are called when various rules are broken. These are usually 5 yards, 10 yards, 15 yards, or spot of foul. Minor penalties just move the ball, but major penalties generally include an automatic first down for the offense. Some penalties are automatic and result is a stoppage of play (illegal motion, offensive offsides, etc.). Most allow the opposing team to take the penalty or decline. An offense would decline a defensive holding penalty if they scored a touchdown despite being held. Similarly, a defense would decline a penalty if they got the ball instead.

The last form of scoring is called a safety. This is when a defense forces an offense to end the play in their own end zone. This can be a punter having a punt go over his head and out the endzone, a runner being tackled behind his goal line, or penalties in the endzone. After this, the team that had the ball must kick off from their own twenty to the opponents. A safety is worth two points.

In short, the scoring is six points for a touchdown, three for a field goal, two for a safety, and a choice of one or two extra points after a touchdown.

There are 32 NFL teams and several hundred college teams. The NFL is broken into two conferences of 16 teams, with four teams in each division. This results in four division winners in each conference. To allow each division winner a home game in the playoffs, two wild cards are selected in each conference. These are the teams with the best records that did not win their division. The two division winners with the worst records host wildcard opponents in the first round of the playoffs. The best two teams have the week off- called a 'bye'. The second round has the best teams hosting the winners of the first round. After that, there will be two teams in each conference who meet in the Conference Championship game. The winners of the Championship games meet in the Super Bowl, which is held at a pre-determined and neutral site.

  8. Whoa Whoa....slow down...

First, why don't you ask your dad to take the time to explain it to you.  Its easy enough to start out small.  Ask him who his favorite team is.  Once you get to know the players, it becomes more exciting.  Then once you know who his team is, go to their website for more info about them.

There are 32 teams... 16 regular season games, and each team has a 'bye' week or a week off from play.

There are 2 conferences, NFC and AFC.  The best from each meet in late January, early February for the Superbowl.

There are 11 men on the field at all times from each team.

When your team has the ball, they are on offense.  When the opposing team has the ball, your team is on deffense.

There are 4-15 minute quarters, each team has 3 time outs per half.  The clock can be stopped for various reasons; time out called, ball run out of bounds, first down...oh and the downs.  Each team, on offense, has the opportunity to take the ball down the field in 10 yard increments.  They have 4 opportunties to get a 10 yard gain.  Each time they get a 10 yard gain within those 4 opportunites, they get 4 more tries to get 10 more yards.  If they haven't moved the ball far enough during the first 3 tries, on '4th down' they may punt the ball to the other team on 4th down so then the other team would be on offense.

I hope this helps a bit...place me on your contacts, if you like, and email me with other questions..I'd be happy to help.

But...tell Dad you need to learn the sport so you can watch and enjoy the game with him!  My first husband taught me the game at age 18 and 30 years later, I still love it!

    Good luck!
