Question:

Question about formula fed baby - please help!?

Does anyone happen to know what the minimum amount of formula a 3 month old needs to take in a 24 hour period in order to remain hydrated and as healthy as possible?

We are having a number of issues with our Daughter who has a confirmed cows milk protein allergy and chronic reflux etc and since she was changed (for the 7th time) onto Neocate we have struggled to get her to take anywhere near the amount she used to take. At one point she would happily guzzle 36oz a day of her regular off-the-shelf formula but now, on Neocate we are lucky to get 20oz into her and today she only took 14oz.

We are under the Children's hospital and everything that can be done for her, is being done but I just wanted to know if there was a minimum that they needed to take in order to maintain weight etc?

Thanks in advance!

  1. I honestly believe that this question would be best presented to her doctor.

  2. This is a guess but I'd say at least an oz to 2 oz per each pound that she weighs. Follow your docs orders and just do your best to get her to drink as much as possible. Good luck!

  3. Another *obvious* reason breastmilk is best.

  4. I have a chart from Simillac that says 25-36 oz. for a 3 month old. My daughter is 4 months old and eats about 30 oz. a day. She also has reflux issues and such, but she is gaining weight - is your baby gaining weight? Remember that what one baby does isn't necessarily what your baby needs, so it's hard to say what is the minimum they need to maintain weight. I guess if she continues on with the 14 oz. a day, it would be a  problem - 20 oz is getting closer to normal at least.

Good luck!! I know it's hard and don't listen to the breastfeeding n**i's. I respect their decision to breastfeed. I don't know why they can't respect other's decisions (and sometimes health issues).  The fact that the baby is formula fed in my opinion is neither here nor there because reflux is not caused by the milk type (breast or formula).
