Question about foundation degree programmes?

im thinking of applying for a foundation degree for engineering next year as an insurance choice in case i get low grades at A-levels. what are foundation courses and what do you learn in them? is it worth it. how are they? please suggest

But foundation degrees and foundation years are different. foundation degrees are designed for people without A levels. A foundation year is a year 0 (as in before 1st year) of a degree course and these prepare people to go onto the full degree. They can be for people who have A levels but not in the subject they want to study.

Foundation degrees are great!

Basically you study to an A level standard with a bit of the first year degree course thrown in. This is good because...

1. You'll know pretty quickly if the full degree course is for you. There's no guesswork about whether or not the work at uni is significantly harder because you'll have already studied part of it.

2. If you do well at the foundation level, you're almost guaranteed a place on the full degree course. After all, you've already shown your commitment to the area of study

Unlike what the person above said, you do usually need A levels for a foundation degree, just not as high grades. The foundation degree courses i looked at covered similar work to the BSc course, just with less detail and without a dissertation making it a year shorter. You still get a degree at the end of it, its just not as high as an honours degree. After finishing the foundation degree it can be topped up to the honours degree by staying on for about another year.
