can francophones understand the haitian creole? can they handle a conversation with a creole speaker?

Yes you can understand haitian  creole,i'm french and used to buy an haitian newspaper in New-York city ,and listen to some haitian radio show also .I think that i was interested in it to begin with,also the haitians speak slower than the french do,and its nice to hear creole haitian spoken ,and french is the basic anyway.
