Question:

Question about frozen breast milk...?

I warmed some frozen breast milk to make a bottle. We were going to a meeting so I had to warm it before we left. That was at 6:30. He did not drink any of it because he slept most of the time we were gone. Is it still safe to give to him now, two hours later? Should I warm it some more or just give it to him at room temp? Thanks for your help.

  1. no no no no no.

    throw it out.

dont keep breast milk that been thawed and warmed.

  2. Frozen breast milk is only good for about 1 hour after it has been warmed. After 1 hour the milk starts smelling sour. I would not give him the milk if it has been sitting out for 2 hours.

  3. I heard that you're only aloud to keep it and give it to them if its been an hour

  4. Its best to not heat milk more than necessary, so if he will take it room temp I would do that.

As for how long it is good for, it is certainly true that previously frozen breastmilk has had some of its immunological properties destroyed and is not good for as long as not-previously frozen breastmilk.  However every time they actually study breastmilk they find it is incredibly resistant to bacterial growth and stays good longer than they thought.

The real rule, above and beyond all storage GUIDElines, is that if the milk smells and tastes good it is good.

"Breastmilk is not spoiled unless it smells really bad or tastes sour."

"Milk that is truly bad has a very distinct sour taste and odor. Even if expressed milk is "out of date" it should still be considered safe to give a baby as long as it still has a fresh odor and/or taste."

Milk that smells rancid likely is, and should be discarded.

Even though storage times may be decreased, most bf experts suggest *not* throwing out any milk before the maximum storage time unless when you warm it you notice that it has a very distinct foul smell.

  5. i had a baby myself n my daughter spent most her time n da hospital so i did a lot of pumping of my milk. So i think u should warm up a new onw cuz even tho it breast milk it can still go bad after a while. hope i helped u out a lil.

  6. I would think breast milk the same as any milk and if left out too long it can start producing harmful bactria. Possibly spoil. I would hate for your little man to get a icky tummy because of spoiled milk. Two hours is pretty long for warm milk to be left out and still drinkable. I would dump it as much as that sucks and give him some fresh breast milk.

  7. yes it's safe. you don't need to warm it again either. breastmilk is good at room tem at almost 10 hours. in a warm room 4-6

breastmilk is different than any other milk since it is sterile before baby drinks and it ahs antibodies and such in it

  8. From the Medela handbook that came with the PISA:

How long is breastmilk good after warming?

    * There is no research to answer this question.

    * Some experts recommend that any milk not consumed within an hour be discarded.

    * There have been no reports of harm if the milk is refrigerated, re-warmed and used within a few hours. Check with your doctor.

(I think the last point is talking about milk that has never been in the freezer though.)

edit: Uh yeah I think all this info I just posted is for refrigerated only milk, because I remember my Lactation Consultant telling me that refrigerated milk is good for 10 hours at room temp and frozen milk is only good for 1 hour at room temp.
