Hi. I will be turning 16 this november and have a few questions about getting a drivers permit. Is it required to get a drivers ed course before you get a permit in the state of new jersey? and if so can i take the online courses before i turn 16 and then go to the dmv as soon as i turn 16 and take the written test and driving test? thank you.

  1. no you have to go with a certified driving instructor only because you are 16 they hold your permit until you complete 6 hours of behind the wheel training then it has to be signed by the driving school owner. the instructor must take you to take the written test and the eye test and if you pass then they will hold your permit until your 6 hours are up.

  2. Well, in NJ you have to be 16 1/2 to get your permit IF you have taken the classroom time, passed the school test & have taken a CERTIFIED behind the wheel class.  Once you have done all of that, you can get your permit which you have to have for a full 6 months, then & only then can you get your drivers license, AFTER you turn 17.  You can get your license on your 17th birthday if you can get an appointment to take the road test on that date.

You have never been able to get your drivers license before 17 in NJ.  If you do not have an approved (approved by the state) behind the wheel class, then you have to wait until you are 17 to get your permit & wait another 6 months before you can go for your drivers license.

I had to wait for my permit until 17 in NJ because my high school did not have behind the wheel training.  They did have drivers ed & we took the state written test in class.
