My bf who is at Ft. Benning right now for Basic Training for Infantry, is talking about marriage with me. He has perfect credit. Im have about $1,500 in debt. If we got married with me still in debt...would that ruin his rank or going up in rank? I don't want to affect his career in a bad way cause of my current debt problem. Im working getting myself out of this problem. But I'll need time for it. Please dont' be rude just to be rude, I just want honest, truthful answers. My bf and I will be getting married at some point, I just need to know if my debt problem will effect his new Infantry career. Thank you =)

  1. Your $1,500 in debt should not affect too much.  The only stuff it may affect is your ability to buy a car, rent an apartment, or buy a house.  You'll still be able to do these things, but you may have to pay higher interest, or pay a bigger deposit.

Get in touch with your lender, and set up a payment plan, so that your debt is in good standing before you get married.

Once you get married, there are a lot of resources available to you on post to help you get your finances straight.  Be sure you take advantage of these.  The military is a great place to get your finances straight, just make sure you think about what you are doing.  Make sure that you get advice before you start investing, or buying life insurance.

There are a lot of people out there who think that GI stands for Guaranteed Income, and they want your boyfriend's money.

    Be Careful, and Good Luck

  2. Your debt won't affect his promotions.

I don't believe in soldiers getting married. I was a Marine for 10 years and got out because I wanted to get married. I believe it detracts from their duties.

I'm not really against soldiers being married, just Marines. We need our elite forces to be totally dedicated to their jobs.

  3. No that should not affect his carer. As long as you have a plan to pay it off, or have some kind of payment plan to get your debt payed off there should be no problems at all. Just remember that he will be deployed a lot, so you will have to have a lot of will power and strength to stay by his side through the good and bad times.

       Good luck and congrats.

  4. Your debt will not affect him once you get married. The only way it could is if he has a security clearance that is due to be updated and you live in a community property state. They will run a credit report for that and your name will show on his credit in the future. If the debt is a collection he may have to write a statement about it and usually it is not even an issue.  It would not prevent him from getting promoted at all.

  5. you should be good

  6. I'm guessing you're pretty young.  $1500 is nothing in the scheme of things.   If you love your Joe, put that ring on.  It won't affect his promotions.

God bless him for his service.

  7. I don't mean to be rude, but if $1,500.00 is your ONLY debt then congratulations!!  I mean it!!  Do you want some of my debt??  :)

Your credit will not effect his rank or advancement.  If you had collection agencies calling and electricity being cut off that's one thing.  But, to have a bill and to pay it will not be a bother at all.

Congrats on the up-coming wedding...whenever that shall be!
