Question about getting video from cam to computer?

ok...according to my hubby if we plug the camera into the computer and put the cam on vcr mode we can get stuff into the computer in digital format.

Here's what I want to do...

I want to make silly stop action shorts and music videos. I think I understand windows movie maker enough to do what I want, but can anyone give me pointers to actually get up and start?? I just can't seem to figure out exactly where to begin the process. And any special (preferably free) software that is good to use would help a lot.

Thanks in advance...

  1. If you only have MiniDV, you'll need FireWire, which is an invention of Apple.

  2. It all depends on your camcorder. If you have a big VHS cassette, you will probably need to take it into a camera shop. If you have a Mini DV (a small and thin vhs cassette) you will need to get Firewire (also called IEEE i think) . It is a 45$ Drive and is the best way to do it. Then use the firewire cable and connect the camcorder to the port and go to file, and capture video under movie maker.

  3. you could use an adaptor, usb or even stick your memory card into the computer and it should pop up in a little icon!

  4. Windows movie maker is very limited and so is also Muvee. There are not good and free programs to use and unfortunately the best ones are very expensive, namely Pinnacle 11 or Ulead Video Studio.

Your camera had to come with some programs and I`m sure are limited and they offer to upgrade, which is costly.

I have the same problems, because I worked in my country Argentina, in the movie industry, and I would like to edit what I film: put sound as music or words, or narrative, put titles, animated or not,  and transitions.

All this is a work that has to begin by eliminating or erasing but went wrong or doesn`t interest you or any other viewer.
