Question:

Question about gifted people?

Do gifted people have to be perfect and excel in everything? I have a big vocab and I use it when I want to, I write well and read a lot but I suck at math and science. Most people in my life do believe I am gifted but there is only one person who doesn't and that is my math teacher. She's says that I'm not just becuase I'm in special education and that I'm not labeled as "gifted." That really brought me down and it was depressing. So tell me I can still be gifted regardless of being labled as "learning-disabled" and "mildly autistic?"

  1. OF course you can be. I am learning disabled (dyslexic) , type 1 diabetic, anxiety and panic disorder and I have a hearing impairment, and these I all things I receive special ed for. But I am also labeled as gifted. Have you been identified a gifted? You could request an evaluation. It's called being twice exceptional, and often times what happens is the giftedness is used to compensate for the disability, and is therefor covered up. Try googling it. Also might I add that there are many ways a person can be gifted. They can be gifted in general academia, or in one specific subject (like English in your case maybe), or they can be a wonderful people person. I would also do a bit of research on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligence. Also, don't let people get you down. I would print off information about twice exceptional learners and multiple intelligences for you teacher. And one more thing, did you know most people with learning disabilities actually have above average intelligence (so do most high functioning autistics)? Feel free to email me if you want more info on any thing of this nature

  2. omg my situation exactly! my math teacher hates me i swear- its ur brain type- some ppl are good at english and history and stuff and some ppl have math-science brains- ur math teacher is a stupo and needs to have a HER brain checked!!!!!

  3. everyone is gifted in one form or another, so please don't feel down on yourself.

  4. Everyone's gifted in one way or the other. Except your Math teacher of course. Don't demotivate yourself. You rock! Plus I have the same situation so honey be proud of it! I bet your Math teacher could NEVER write like you do.

  5. There are many different kinds of intelligences. (this teacher is stuck in a rut-do you work and don't hear the cruel words she said)

  6. No, they don't , and yes, you can!

I've assessed several gifted students who have a learning disability! Proving that an autistic kid is gifted is a little more difficult. Some of them can't be bothered to do their best on tests because they honestly don't care about their scores or what other people think of them!

The truth is, there are many ways to be gifted or to be intelligent. Many of the people history knows to be great leaders were mediocre students, including Gandhi and Einstein. One of Einstein's teachers tried to have him expelled because all he did was sit in the back of the classroom and smile!

  7. Yes a person CAN be gifted and have learning disabilities at the same time.

It's called 'twice exceptional'.  Search for info on this, print it out and give to teacher.
