Long story short,I really want to be a health/phys ed teacher and coach a school team, but everyone tells me that it is difficult to find an open health/phys ed job because the teachers tend to stay in for a long time etc. My question is,can I go to college and get a degree for teaching phys ed/health and also maybe English or History as a back up plan? How many years of school am I looking at to do that? Thanks.

  1. Teaching jobs vary by state, as well as the requirements to obtain your credentials & certification.  Best you check with your state board of education.

English & history endorsements are not in high demand for most schools.  Better you'd take up math, science, or a foreign language.

In my state of Michigan, 75 per cent of the teaching graduates are not able to find work in their field.  You might have better prospects if you're open to relocation, if it's like that where you live.

Coaching positions usually starting off as assistants.  And then you work your way up from there.

Good luck > best to research the matter thoroughly.

  2. It's always good to have a back-up plan just in case of injury.  After you take your basics, it should only be an extra 12 hours or so to get a double major.

About the trying to get a job:  In our area, we are opening 3-5 elementary schools per year and 2 middle schools, 1 high school every 2-3 years. So, there are always a few openings.  They usually switch people around and hire people they know for new jobs.  They usually get to know these people because they sub for the district or do volunteer work.  So, that's always a thought.

  3. Different schools, different plans, and it also depends on whether or not you do summer school.

If you do summer school (recommended), you will finish in 4 years, plus you will be eligible to take the necessary certification test in your state.  Speak to the Dean of the School of Education to develop a degree plan.
