  1. Hi,

your guinea pig shouldn't live in a tank but someone already said that so i won't bother with that topic. Anyway, it really depends on the guinea pig. A lot of breeders do not socialize their baby guinea pigs before bringing them to a store. Actually I rarely see tame and calm guinea pigs anymore. I used to breed guinea pigs and I would hold them daily so that they were used to people and the human touch. Guinea pigs aren't TOO expensive to keep up with, keep in mind they need their cage cleaned weekly and need to be fed daily. There are also the things you need to buy when you first get one..their hiding space, the bowls, the water bottle, the vitamin supplements, etc. I am wondering why you want another rodent rather than something a bit more playful such as a cat. Maybe you don't want something that needs to see a vet often, or is such a big responsibility..I don't know. anyway, as I was saying..guinea pigs are calm only if they've been held when they were very little. My guinea pigs used to sit in my lap and stuff..they weren't much fun or anything but I still loved them. If you work at getting your guinea pig used to being held then it'll be worth it i suppose.

  2. I've had two guinea pigs in the past, and they've been the best pets I've ever had. I had one long haired guinea pig named Velcro (everything stuck to his fur) who was a real sweetie. When I held him he would just sit and curl up with me and let me pet him. He recognized the sound of my voice, and he also knew his name. The other ones name was Daisy, and she was really active. She was always moving around and she also loved to be held and pet. All guinea pigs have their own personality, but no matter what they're like I say its totally worth it to have one. You'll need a lot of bedding and food, and you also need to supply them with veggies and possibly cut their nails every once in a while (not fun) but its worth it.

  3. Yeah i have 9 guinea pigs right now. I use C&C cages for them all and also for one of my rabbits, i have four cages right now. And they never get ruined or anything which is totally worth it, i got 28 for 12 dollars. the only bad thing is you have to change their bedding a lot, They pee a lot. I spent probably 50 bucks a month, bulk on food, bedding, toys, etc. also treats. i do think C&C cages are better than regular cages, because you can redo it anytime you want for a different look. As for wiggling, Mine will not let me pick her up easily. But her sister lets me pick her up super easy. she also likes to run around and is active, but she will also sometimes just lay on my chest and let me pet her and purr. they also watch TV with me. They are calm for the most part, depending on the personality. They all have different personalities remember, I would suggest getting one from a breeder not from a petstore, as my experiences with petstore animals, is horrible but with breeders is great. They are very friendly!! I would totally suggest getting a guinea pig, well actually TWO because they get lonely super quickly. They are very social animals and if they get depressed, lonely they bite. and hide and will run away from you.

  4. I have a hamster too, but a couple months ago I got a guinea pig. I find guinea pigs waaayyyy better than hamsters, so when my hamster dies im not getting a new one. Guinea pigs are very calm, loving creatures that will just sit on you shoulder or on your lap. If you put them in a bath they can get a little crazy, but only give them a bath if they really need one. It can give them neumonia, and besides, they can clean themselves. Anyways... I reccomend getting a guinea pig. They are so much fun to be with. If you want to get a cheap guinea pig cage, look at a garage sale. I got my cage as a used rabbit cage for $10. They are usually like over $100. But if your dad can build one, then that's awesome too. Make sure it's big. My guinea pig is very calm, and they get along with other guinea pigs great too. Your guinea pig will just sit on your lap while watching tv, or going on the copmuter. But they like to cuddle, so get ready for that if your going to get one! If you do get one though, you should ask the pet store owner if you can hold one first, and pick out one you like. If it has a good personality, great! if not get a different one. It's a good way of getting to know it better too. Anyways, you should do some research befroe getting one. They are a lot different from hamsters. I definately reccomend getting one! Good Luck!

  5. I have three guinea pigs. They're a little more nervous than hamsters when it comes to being picked up - remember, they're prey animals and their instinct is to "RUN!!!" whenever something big approaches. I've had one of those pigs for 3 years and while she isn't afraid of me, she'll still try to avoid being picked up, even after all this time.

Most guinea pigs will sit calmly on your lap...some need to be bribed with vegetables.

They're also a lot of fun to watch running around outside the cage. Even with a big cage, you'll need to give them floor time. It will be enjoyable for both you and the guinea pigs...if you don't mind cleaning up some "accidents." You might want to put towels down and have some carpet cleaner handy. Guinea pigs are messy. They produce a lot of waste and need their cages cleaned out more frequently than a hamster, and they won't hesitate to simply go potty wherever they are. I've never had any luck litter training them.

They're also more expensive to feed. A big part of their diet is fresh vegetables, which are more expensive than dry food.

So, are they worth it? It's hard to say. They are expensive and a lot of work, so I'd recommend you visit with some guinea pigs before making a decision! They're worth it for me, but they might not be for some other people.

  6. forget the first 2 answers...their wrong.

A cage would be fine for them.

Guinea Pigs, I would say, ARE better than hamsters. And they live a lot longer, too! No, they won't usually squrim around in ur hands or be "spazy", they are normally clam, social, affectionate, and do love to be held and pet.

they do not bite or claw on purpose.

they are VERY nice and gentle, they will even purr and l**k!

they are very fun, though a bit timid at first, they will get use to you and will become very social.

Everything is worth it for a guinea pig!

They do not have smell problems like hamsters...guinea pigs do not have a natural scent, and I recomend getting "soft-sorbent" bedding for them, which has excellent oder-control! ("carefresh" brand is good, too)

I got my first guinea pigs a year ago, and they've changed my life in such a good way!

    So, good luck.

  7. first off guinea pigs are a lot worse than hamsters. they are very skittish and will jump from your hands in an attempt to flee. and guinea pigs absolutely CANNOT be kept in a tank, its cruel. they need a wire cage, end of story. guinea pigs are pretty inexpensive, but if you want an exciting pet that likes to be held, get rats. trust me
