Question about hermit crab shells (and bathing)?

Question

I just got 2 new hermit crabs...Im wondering how soon do I need to put some shells in there for them? Also how big should they be in comparison to the ones theyre in now? ( slightly bigger, alot bigger, etc?) .....When they switch shells, do I leave the old ones in, or do I take them out?

Final question....

When I bathe them do I use fresh water, or salt water? Thanks!!!
