Question:

Question about hitting the net in Volleyball?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

Scenario:

-I see the opponent's ball that seems to be heading into the net.

-I place my hands right up to the net without making any contact with the net

-The ball hits the net, which results in the net hitting my hands

- My hands do move towards the net in any way appearing as I am hitting the net in any purposeful way

My intention is to change the path of the ball once it hits the net to make it more difficult for the opponent to play off the net.

Legal or not? References would be great.

  1. If you move your hands to alter the rebound of the ball off the net, then you are interfering with the play. hence, a violation and you would should expect to be called.

Its a Bush-league play and I wouldn't advise it. Very cheesy and unsportsmanlike.

  2. It's legal if the ball touching the net causes the net to touch your hands. But if your hand touches the net first without the ball hitting it then it's illegal.

  3. As a referee, I look to see if I think you moved your hands to cause that contact, then I will call you for being in the net.  If I think your hands were there and the ball just hit them, then it is play on.  It is not a fault if the net makes contact with you, however you can not cause the contact.  See the below rules.  You would be playing the ball and you would be interfering with the play if you move your hands.

Another option is unsportsmanlike conduct.  Since you are trying to do it on purpose, it is also unsportsmanlike conduct.

USAV Rule 11.3.1 Contact with the net by a player is not a fault, unless it is made during the action of playing the ball, or it interferes with play.

USAV Rule 11.3.3  When the ball is driven into the net and it causes it to touch an opponent, no fault is committed.

  4. You cannot touch the net, if you do, it results in a side out. If the force of the ball hitting the net touches you then it is a judgement call by the chair official.

  5. The short answer: It is a judgement call by the referee.

  6. Legal. Technically.

The thing about volleyball is, different leagues have different rules. So one judge might say "legal" another might say "illegal". But technically official rules say that is legal.

  7. That  is not legal anyone who touche the net will be called on for it

  8. Since you said "My intention is to change the path of the ball once it hits the net to make it more difficult for the opponent to play off the net," it's illegal. If you were simply putting your hands up and the net hits your hand due to the ball going into the net, that's a different story. However, in your case, since you intentionally hit the ball while it was in the net, it's a foul on you as you interfered with the ball and prevented your opponent from trying the hit.

  9. they would probably call it but if they dont see it it is cool

  10. Had you not talked about your intention, it could have been a judgment call. If the intention of interference is clear, a fault call is guaranteed.

It used to be a tricky play for players to abuse the net rule, when passive touch of the net was all legal (when the ball pushed the net and caused it to touch one opponent's body).

These days more players would shake their tummy at the net instead of poking into the ball in order to satisfy their interference desire without risking being called.
