  1. First, let's clear up a couple of misconceptions. Fillies are allowed to race in ALL of the Triple Crown races against the colts, though they have a Triple Crown of their own. There have been only 3 fillies that have actually won the Kentucky Derby, and to date there has never been a winner of the regular Triple Crown who was female. There were NO fillies in this year's Derby. Fillies are allowed to run in ALL races in which colts also race- and some of them, such as Mom's Command, have actually beaten the colts. Fillies ARE given a weight allowance of 5 pounds in major races against the colts, such as the Derby. Fillies DO have their own stakes races- and those races are restricted to them only, and the colts are not allowed to compete, because it would be unfair to the colts to make them run at heavier weights while the fillies are so much lighter. Weight DOES make a difference over long distances, such as those greater than a mile. The heavier the weight, the more quickly the horse will tire and slow down. Hopefully, this will clear up some of the confusion.

  2. All the other horses were male, but female horses are allowed to run in the Derby. Basically, female horses are allowed to run in races that are predominately male, but male horses cannot run in female races which are restricted to fillies and mares only.

  3. there were no Fillies in this years derby, but they are allowed to run, the last filly to win the derby was winning colors in 1988, before that it was genuine risk in 1980.

In most races where a filly or mare are racing the boy's they are given a weight allowance to help compensate.

  4. Yes.  Usually they split up the mares (females) and geldings and stallions.  The mares have no chance up against the boys because they have more stamina and more speed.  It would just lower the confidence for the mare to loose every race.  Although you can enter a mare into a race with the boys, there has been a few.
