How do you write something when someone is talking? I know you put the quote things but do you put a comma after?

Example:

"Yes.", I said

Or...

"Yes." I said.

None of those look write to me!!! Or how about when you are putting like "the" after whatever the person is saying like...

"No, you cannot." The Queen said.

Or...

"No, you cannot." the Queen said.

I don't even know if the word "queen" should even be capitalized in that sentece!

Please help! Thanks

  1. "Yes." I said.

you use a comma if your sentence is like

"Would you mind," she started, "if i took him to school?"

    and

"No, you cannot." the Queen said.

  2. to go with one

  3. You do not need the full stop after 'Yes' or 'cannot'.

' "Yes," I said.'   is correct as you need to link the spoken word and the speaker in the same sentence.

' "No, you cannot," the Queen said', is correct. Speaker and words spoken belong to the same sentence.

Queen is capitalised when it is used as a title, as it is in your sentence.

I advise you to pick up a book and pay attention to the punctuation in it. It seems to me that you have been given plenty of theory about punctuation without enough practical help. Pick up the easiest book you can find, with plenty of dialogue in it. That will help you to see how it is normally written.
