"Most insects have neither gills nor lungs, and they are usually much smaller than mammals and fish. This small size is important when the insects are in water. Explain why."

  3. Well, insects don't have neither gills nor lungs. They do have tracheal tubes for respiration and distributionn of oxygen. And they are usually smaller than mammals and fishes because it is their adaptation. Being smaller has some advantages too, in them. Distribution of nutrients in the circulatory system is faster and requires less energy. And they also have higher metabolic rates.

    Since they are small, they have higher surface area to volume ratio, thus they can actually walk in water. And water has surface tension.
