If you have a high IQ, good at problem solving and can learn quickly but have poor social skills. am I classed as clever or do you need to have both? I have this problem, I'm clever but when I start new jobs I never have anything to say and when I do people dont look bothered. I seem distant around people but when Im alone im ok. Who would I see to solve this problem?

  1. My brother is the same way!  He is soo smart, so he always has complex thoughts and ideas going on in his mind that it makes it difficult for him to relate to other 'normal' people on a social level (about the weather, gossip, the latest news stories etc)

I don't know if you need to see anyone for this 'problem'.  If it's important to you, just make an effort to 'lighten' your mental load maybe talk more based on your FEELINGS about everday things than your analyzed THOUGHTS about concepts, theories etc

You can do it!  Smile when talking to people and laugh when people make a joke, pay attention if someone is being sarcastic, my bro never picks up on that!  amazing since he's so smart

  2. Interesting question. You are highly intelligent but have poor social skills...it's not that uncommon. I think social skills require the same practice as intellectual ones, so you need to put yourself in social situations, watch how others relate, and mimic until it becomes second nature. I know it is trite but you need to get out there!

  3. Yes you need both. You need to see a woman, for sure. Preferably one who can instill a little more self confidence in you, and one with friends she can introduce you to so you can practice.

  4. there is a 'new' drug out that can be taken 30 minutes before any stressful meeting, sorry can't remember the name but was in Sunday Times.

  5. I have similar issues you are clever you know that . The quiet start in employment is the period where you analise people and get to understand them , after which you start communicating . If its the area where people are not moved by what ou have to say , try confidence building classes or better still assertiveness classes

  6. I once had the same problem, and to some extend I still do.  It is hard for me to come up with anything to say- let alone something clever and meaningful.  Now I think of things to say before I am in a certain situation.  I will already have a conversation starter in my head and a few replies I could use when it is time for me to speak again.  Planning in advance works for me.

  7. Yes you do need social skills to succeed in most walks of life. But like intelligence, social skills are hard to acquire if you don't already have them. Whether one is born with them or learns them as a child I don't know. But some people seem naturally sociable; others find it difficult.

There are tricks you can learn from books about how to keep up a conversation, read body language, make friends, etc, but if you're naturally introverted and prefer your own company, those things will always be forced and unnatural.

I should know, I'm like that myself. But now I've come to terms with the fact that I'm introverted, I have a very happy life and so can you.

  8. Of course you need both.

Do you think Bill Gates is shy? No, he's not. And thats why he owns one of the biggest business' in the world.

Most prodigy children are the most confident. They can talk to strangers about anything. You certainly need both.

    Intelligence isnt just academics.

Intelligence (also called intellect) is an umbrella term used to describe a property of the mind that encompasses many related abilities, such as the capacities to reason, to plan, to solve problems, to think abstractly, to comprehend ideas, to use language, and to learn. There are several ways to define intelligence. In some cases, intelligence may include traits such as creativity, personality, character, knowledge, or wisdom. However, some psychologists prefer not to include these traits in the definition of intelligence.
