Question about interview procedure?

I went to an interview today at a known residential home for people with mental retardation in my area. I found the job listed on the institution's main site.

We were asked to bring in our license, social security card, and diploma. They made copies of them and we filled out a packet of questions, they held one-on-one interviews, and then asked us to fill out forms for criminal background checks, reference forms, etc.

They had a list of people who were set to attend this day - and there were about 50 people. A group of 10-15 came in every half hour or so.

I told my friend about this and he said "Make sure it's not a scam." So now I am paranoid that it was! Is this likely? I found the job on the main site. The interview was at the actual campus. In the paperwork and in an email I recieved, it said that they have a high number of applicants. So, I figured they wanted to speak to as many as they can and get a feel of the applicants before the criminal background check comes back. They saved our packets - and I assume they are waiting for the reports to come back before they decide who to hire for sure.

Was the way of interviewing odd? Or do you think this sort of way is the norm for this sort of place? I'd assume they are looking for a good number of people - since it's almost the size of of a hospital setting. But now I am becoming a worry-wart because of my friends statement. Does the process I explain sound legitimate? I understand they need to do the background check for working with people in this sort of setting, but I wasn't actually hired yet (and it even said on one paper that 'This does not guarantee you will be hired.)

What are your thoughts?

  1. just take it like you go to any job interview. It would be a scam if you give them some money.
