Jesus said that if an eye is offending you, pluck it out. Because it is better to sacrifice one part of the body, instead of the whole body.

well think of the metaphor:  the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

it is like say you get gangrene in your leg...we can cut off the leg and you will live...or leave the leg there are you can suffer and die from it.  it is better to loose a limb than your life.

It is a lot like democracy you need to follow the needs of the majority, not the needs of the minority.

This is a parable that Jesus spoke in, not to be taken literally. IE: a rotten apple spoils the barrel, get rid of the rotten apple.

The point is that it is better to go to heaven maimed than to go to h**l.  Going to h**l would be sacrificing your whole body.  Jesus is not saying that you need to pluck your eye out.  Even if you did, you would still sin and possibly go to h**l.  The point he is making is that sin is very serious and should not be taken lightly.  

So, what's a sinner to do?

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
