this question may have know reason to exist but...

in the bourne movies jason knows krav maga and it shows in the action scenes. if he knew karate would he have been worse off?

i know its a movie and if you want you can pretend its real life like how a real secret agent would be in the situations. i only picked this movie cause i cant think of any other that are kinda like real life secret agent fighting styles, and i dont know any real life examples i could use

but anyway's does karate have the same close quarter fighting that krav maga kinda showd were he was using elbos and stuff to his advantage.

also would a karate guy have a chance in any of the same scenarios?

  1. In application, most martial art styles tend to work the same way. Although Krav Maga was clearly present in the Bourne movies, I think the main style he used was Arnis (often called 'Kali', which is a Filipino fighting art).

In regards to karate, I don't think he would have been worse off. Hard to say either way, but I've been studying Okinawan karate for 14 years and from watching those movies, there's really not much difference how it's applied on the street.

Also, yes, it's the student, not the martial art. There is no superior or inferior art. I will say that the junk you see in UFC is pretty close to being inferior though - mainly because they only scratch the surface of what there is to learn in ANY martial art. It's basic stuff. Plus, it's not about fighting, which those guys don't seem to get.

  2. he would probably have the same outcome. If style really mattered people wouldn't practice the "inferior" styles and only the "superior" styles. Karate has been around for centuries, if it was useless at all, it wouldn't still be practiced.

  3. Some styles of Karate, particularly the Okinawan ones to close fighting with elbow, knee, back leg sweeps, throws and take downs.  Most commerical Karate is pretty lame though.

  4. The answer is both yes and no.

The style isn't what determines a martial artist's skill or ability in battle. The martial artist is what determines skill or ability in battle. Style is a personal choice. It's all about how hard you train, and whether or not you're taught or train properly, not the style.

  5. I teach karate myself.  It is a reality based system that looks at close fighting using elbows, knees, head but, gouges, etc.

But to answer not all forms deal with close fighting.

  6. Movies follow a script what ever art the actor knows is adapted to the script for instance the bourne role was choreographed by JAMES LEW he does not know KRAV MAGA he is a well known kung fu practioner.KAM YUEN is another kung fu movie choreographer and did most of the moves for the series KUNG FU.Because LEW is large for a chinese and in excellent shape he can also do work as a double for many stars.
