Question:

Question about key cutting?!?

I want to go and get a key cut. I have a couple of questions,

will they ask me for ID, do I have to be of a certain age?

Will they cut any key, any key what so ever, for example a key which opens a box. How much does it cost, roughly?

Thanks :)

  1. they will only ask for id etc if its a specialised key for a safe.

  2. The will not ask you for Identification, unless it is a set of master keys for a business. Most of those are made from blanks that most retailers don't carry and are considered high security keys. Yale, National, and Best are among  those on that list, but not every blank they make is a high security. If you know how to pay a cashier, you are considered old enough. The other keys that  absolutely  no  retailer  will  cut, are the  ones that are stamped ," Do Not Duplicate " . And forget about trying to scratch it off,  tape over it, or paint over it. They will and do find it. Even if it has been filed off using a Mill B. File. You can't trick em, I have seen every trick in the books, and they don't work. Price is from .99 cents - $5.99  usually .99 for single cut, and $1.99 for double cut. If they have a blank for your little box, they they can cut it.

  3. You can have a key cut if it is not marked with "do not copy" or something like that. They also may not be able to cut the key if it is one with a chip.

It shouldn't cost anymore than $3.00 depending on the key.

I have never been asked my age or for my id when having extra keys cut.

  4. Have the key you want cut and have enough money to pay for it.  Other than that, wearing only a shirt and a pair of shoes will do. I read the sign on the door.
