Question:

Question about knitting.

I recently began knitting and I do pretty good at it. My only problem is that when I finish my project it roles up. I've tried loosening up my stitches and using different yarn, but it still does it. Is that just what it does or am I doing something to cause it?

  1. mickiinpodunk is absolutely correct and has given some good tips to avoid the problem.  Sometimes you can take out some of the roll when you block the final piece.  I sometimes do a crochet edge on necklines of sweaters.

There are some good on-line tutorials on finishing your pieces.

    Good luck.

  2. What do you mean by it roles up??Go to google.com and type that in or you can try to find a knitting class in your area and see if they can help you.hope i helped=)

  3. If you are knitting something in stockinette stitch (knit one row and purl the next) your piece will roll.  That is the nature of stockinette.  It is related to the geometry of the stitches (yes, knitting is based on algebra and geometry).  Knit stitches on the one side are rectangular and purl stitches on the other side are square and the yarn is trying to make them the same shape, the result being rolling inward or upward.  There are times when you want this to happen--roll brim hats, rolled hems or neckline finishes (think J. Crew sweaters), but most of the time you don't want a finished piece to roll.  If you have something that you are seaming, pieces of a sweater for example, the act of seaming together two edges rolling in opposite directions, it will cancel itself out.  However, for pieces that are individually supposed to lie flat the only solution to rolling is to knit at least and inch worth of rows or stitches on all edges with a non-rolling stitch pattern--garter stitch (knit on both sided), seed stitch (k1, p1 on one side then knit the purls and purl the knits on the other), also known as moss stitch, or double moss stitch (k2, p2 on one side for 2 rows, then knit the purls and purl the knits for two rows).  Ribbing at the top and bottom edges also will not curl up or downwards.

  4. don't worry that's what always happens you're not doing anything wrong,my pieces are the same, lossening up the stitches as you already know doesn't do anything, good luck with knitting!!
