Question:

Question about letterbox numbers in Ireland?

I live in Australia and most of my relatives live in Ireland. I noticed that when i visit there none of the letterboxes have numbers on them. You just write down the person's name and then street, etc.

Why is this and how does the postie know which house to deliver letters to?

  1. There aren't any numbers in the countryside. In the streets in Ireland the doors have numbers on them, which is the same as a letter nob number I suppose.

Anyway, the answer to the houses in the countryside not having numbers it actually just that the postman knows everyone!

  2. Theres only 4.5 million in Ireland, a mid sized town would have only 3000 or so people.

In rural towns you can be sure not only will the postman know where you live, but will stop to have a gossip too : )

In rural areas for elderly people the postman is like a social worker!

  3. most places have numbers on the door, as my house does. However a lot of times people don't put the number on letters, but I still get them. The postman just knows everyones names and which house they live in

  4. my friends living in the countryside dont have numbers on their doors mainly because its a small community so the postman would be familiar with who lives where.

I live in the town so we do have numbers :D

  5. Most houses have the numbers on the front doors, especially on housing estates. But some houses acually have names instead of numbers for example, 'River View Cottage'. And in apartments the numbers are listed on post boxes in the hall or lobby. Hope this helps to make things clearer for you.
