Question about lightning?

So I was just wondering if anyone knows how far lightning can travel in water? how deep can it go? how far does the elctricty spread?

I was asked this question a couple days ago and i wanted to know if anyone else knew the answer?

  1. To my knowledge, lightning does not travel deep into water. If I am not mistaken, it strikes the surface of the water, and then dissipates. The charged particles that make up a bolt of lightning scatter out. Electric current will travel through the water and weaken as it travels outward.


  2. Water is a good conductor so it will carry, but there is no data on this, so no one could really say.  Lightening hitting water is rare compared to land.
