Question:

Question about meeting with professor?

I have a 2 hour meeting with my professor at a coffee shop which I know has an outdoor patio.

I smoke cigarettes and I know she does but she tries to hide it from her students.

Should I take the initiative to suggest we sit outside so I can smoke?

I was thinking of saying "Do you mind if we sit outside so I can smoke?" It is going to be a long and semi-intense meeting.

I'm guessing she would appreciate the opportunity to smoke as well.

  1. This is a little awkward, I think.  If she is trying to conceal the fact that she smokes from her students, she may not readily agree to smoke in your presence.  Therefore, if you ask her if she would mind sitting outside so YOU can smoke, and she says OK, but then doesn't smoke herself...well, you see, that could make her uncomfortable and possibly want to smoke all the more and so she might be more tense, etc., than if you both just abandoned smoking for the duration of the meeting.  I think I would take her lead.  I would not smoke unless she smoked first, even if you do sit outside.  Just me.

  2. Sit outside! it's way more relaxed...and if you wanna smoke you can, if you don't think you'd be comfortable don't mention it, just fire up when you get ready.

  3. I would definitely do that, especially if you know she smokes as well.

I often do that with my clients who I know smoke.  It's so nice having meetings with clients when you can both puff away.

  4. I don't see the problem, if you want to sit out side to smoke ask her, if she wants to join in then she will. Be more concerned with what the meeting is about instead of if she is gonna smoke or not.
