Question about motorcycles..

i would prefer it if people who regularly ride motorcycles could answer this question for me.

i have had an account for quite some time with money in it so i can someday buy a car.. however, with gas prices so outrageous, i'm not sure it's even worth it to buy a car that i can barely afford to keep running..

So. I was thinking I might learn to drive and eventually get a motorcycle. I've been looking at bikes like Kawasaki Ninjas and similar.

So here is my question - I know that riding motorcycles can put your life in danger. Is it worth it to use a motorcycle instead of a car to avoid paying as much for gas?

thanks..

  1. I own both a bike and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The bike gets 58mpg and the Jeep 16. I ride the bike for fuel savings and fun. I never leave home in a rain but I will ride in it. It is a little more dangerous than a car but you know that going in. Whichever you do, both are dangerous if you don't watch the other guy. I do believe however you'll want both.

  2. as i know nothing about you other than you might want a bike and you cant afford fixing a junker.   first is to go to motorcycle safty class.   you will learn how to stay out of trouble and out of harms way...  is it worth the $. probably not...  depending on your position in life...   a car is a ongoing expense.   ins. gas  (purchase)  larger amounts...  mpg in cars are now approaching bikes..   toyota yaris   gets i think 40mpg  most bikes   esp. larger ones are real close...  a car you can use all year..   you have to be real tuff to drive in rain and freezing times...   but if you live in a mild zone getting a small bike for local is a real $saver.   i use my small 90cc bike in town all the time.

  3. I have a car and a motorcycle. My answer is if you only get one make it a car. Much safer and can haul people and things in any weather.riding in the cold or wet is no fun. Upkeep on a bike is expensive also . tires cost more than car tires and only last at best 12k miles.

  4. On a motorcycles it's about better visibility, shorter braking distances, more acceleration and maneuverability. Cars are meant to take a crash and bikes are made to avoid a crash.

It also depends on how you look at it, you get thrown from a motorcycle, in a car you can get trapped and burned alive or drown in it if it goes over a bridge.

In a car your concentration gets diverted by switching songs, talking to people, drinking or eating. On a bike you never get distracted and even now they have Heads Up Displays in the helmet so you don't even need to look down at the gauges.

  5. You may want to look into the Can Am Spyder. Search the web.

  6. I dont see where you think you are putting your life in danger, you can get killed or injured in a car just as easily as on a motorcycle if you respect the bike and ride like you have some sense. as for riding to save gas, I ride for pleasure not for economy.

  7. definatly get a car first, even if a small car. get a bike just for back up and/or leasuire

  8. I have been riding motorcycles for more than 40 years. Riding for economy is one reason and riding for fun is the other. If you own only a motorcycle, then you will eventually have to deal with foul weather. I have been through the cold, the rain, the snow, all on a bike. It is MISERABLE. Having only a bike for transportation without a car for back up is a tough life.

As far as the type of bike, I would not recomend a Ninja for a new rider. This type of bike just tempts you into stupidity. I would recommend either a small cruiser or standard as a first bike. Once you are competent, then you can trade up to the sport/racer type.

If you have a car first, even an older one will do, then purchase a bike, let's say under 700cc, the bike will most likely pay for itself in fuel savings.

    That's my $.02

  9. I'm not sure you should do it if you feel your life is in danger, but if you try it and like it the price of gas is just an extra incentive.
