Question:

Question about my 18 year old and insurance

I have an 18 year old who takes ADHD medication which without insurance costs well over $300 a month. She is not interested in going to college at this point so I'm not sure how much longer I can keep her on my insurance plan.

Assuming it takes her awhile to find a job with good insurance does anyone have any suggestions on how to make her medical needs affordable for her?

  1. Try investing your money.  As it is giving returns, it can be used to stymy the cost of her medication.  Sorry I couldnt be much more of assistance.  It is a difficult situation you are in.  But I hope she gets a job, and it will take some of pressure off of you.

  2. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of options during that transitional time. If she has no plans to go to college and is looking for a job, then she'll certainly want to choose one that offers medical benefits. Until then, using generic versions of the medications will save a lot of money.

  3. Not really.   Cobra for her will probably cost more than the $300 a month.  You could see if Target or Walmart have any appropriate meds in the $4 generics, but it would probably only be basic ritilin.

And no one is going to sell her a private policy, that covers the ADHD.

  4. Drug companies have programs for people who can't afford their drugs.  Check the manufacturer's website.  Check out Canadian prices although that's not as good a deal as it once was.  See whether there's a generic drug that will work for her.  As far as other medical needs, see where in your area there's a low cost clinic for people without insurance.  They exist but they're not everywhere.  If there's a teaching hospital near you, they may have one.

She needs to get a job with medical benefits.  She really does.
