Question:

Question about my 8 week old sleep/eating "schedule". Can anyone relate or give advice...

During the day my 8 week old eats 6 oz every 4 hours. So let's say 7:15, 11:15, 3:15 and 7:15. He finishes those 4 bottles in their entirety. He goes to sleep around 8:00 pm and wakes up seeming like he definitely wants to eat 4 hours later. At that feeding though

( 12:15 am ) he barely eats 2 or 3 oz. Sometimes less. So he eats and goes back to sleep. 3 or 4 hours later ( about 3:15-4:15 am ) he wakes again wanting to eat, but only takes 3 oz or so again. I wish he would just sleep longer if he is not really that hungry. Is there anything I can do about this

  1. try to stimulate him @ midnight so he will stay awake and eat more, mabye then he'd sleep longer

  2. You can start putting infant cereal (a little) into his bottles to put a little more than milk on his stomach till the next feeding. I was told that and did it when my son was 8 weeks as well and it worked.

  3. My daughter did that at that age but she wouldn't eat much at all, then I introduced the binky, and turns out she wasn't really hungry she just wanted to suck. So when she stirs I give her her binky and she goes back to sleep. And there is a definite difference in her binky wanting waking and her hungry waking. Most of the time she sleeps through the whole night, from like 8-9:30, and she doesn't even want to eat first thing when she wakes, she is usually hungry about 30 minutes after she gets up. Sometimes she wakes during the night and wants to eat. The binky definitely saved me. You could try that. Good luck!

  4. sounds like if he would just take six ounces at midnight, he'd sleep through? my advice is try not to feed him at 12:15...try rocking, soothing, and if you use one, a pacifier. If he insists, obviously, feed him. If not, and he goes back to sleep, then he'll probably be more receptive to a bottle at 1:15 a.m. and will likely take the whole thing. that might help him get through without the 3:15-4:15 feeding and you just might get some rest. it could help alter the schedule for you. Also, it's early, so just check everything with your doctor before following any advice on here, mine or others'. and, be warned just when you think you might get some sleep, they start teething...which might be the problem anyway.

  5. no just feed the baby what he wants and let him go back to sleep. i would have killed for 4 hours straight of sleep when my two were that age.

  6. I have a 9 wk old and what I do is that I try to keep him awake more during the day and i give him his last bottle at 11 pm  and he does not wake up until 6 or 7 am but if i put him to sleep early he will wake up in the middle of the night and eat a little 2-3 oz or less which he normally eats 5-6oz during the day.

  7. Well my son started doing that, and his pedi..who was my pedi..how funny LOL said that 12 pounds was the magic number, which is where my son was. And once they reach 12 pounds...they can go a full 8 hours without a feeding. ANd she said to let him fuss and maybe he will go back to sleep. Also I have heard of people giving their babies less everynight, like you say he takes 2-3 oz..offer him only 1-2 oz. I have not tried that so I dont know. I just kept feeding my son when he woke...if the pacifier did not work. And at 3 1/2 months he started sleeping through. Then at 4 months he woke up for a week at 4 am EVERY NIGHT-so i fed him lol and now he sleeps through again . :) thank goodness!
