Question:

Question about my baby in NICU?

my baby had a seizure right after birth and is now in NICU. His vitals have been good and he can breathe on his own. He's also been pooping/peeing fine and likes to suck on a pacifier. The Dr's think he might have an infection. Today his blood platelet count dropped significantly. He is being treated with antibiotics along with having other tests ran. The Dr. also told me it wasn't likely to be fatal. I'm so afraid I'm going to lose my son. He was 39 weeks when born. Has anyone else been through this? Or can offer some hope? I'm completely beside myself/

  1. My baby had seizures right after birth and was in NICU for a week before we could take him home.  They conducted tons of tests and gave him antibiotics just in case it was an infection. He continued having seizures for a little over a month and then they just stopped! He took seizure medicine for six months though and has now come off of it and is still seizure free. The doctors could never figure out why the seizures happened. He had to be suctioned out because he could not get passed my tailbone.  I have always wondered if this caused minor brain damage that caused the seizures. He still gets check ups at the neurologist but everything seems fine!  You are in my thoughts and prayers!

  2. NICU is a scary place to be. I am so so sorry you are experiencing this.  My suggestion would be to be as pro-active as possible....get a second opinion, call other NICU's to see there opinions, etc, etc. Maybe if you feel like you are doing something it'll help you. Also, the importance of touch are extremely vital to a newborns and yours bond. If you are allowed to hold your baby, do so and as much as possible. Go and pray in the hospital's chapel and see if you can find support groups to help you thru this difficult time. I wish you and your baby luck.

  3. I'm sorry, but yes my sister went through something very similar, her baby was premature though which causes lots of problems. The NICU doctors will do their very best to find out what caused this. Take care. Your baby will be home soon.

  4. MY LITTLE SISTER HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND SHE IS EXTREMELY HEALTHY 3 YEAR OLD NOW!!! KEEP HIM IN UR PRAYERS AS WELL AS I WILL GOOD LUCK AND HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL

  5. My middle daughter was conceived when my wife and I were living temporarily in India.  It was a difficult pregnancy and we thought a few times that we were going to loose the baby.  I had my wife flown back to Canada in early October because the baby was due at the end of Jan and I didn't want her born in India.  Nothing against the country but I wanted then both in a place where better medical facilities were available if needed.

My daughter ended up being born 2 weeks early and like your baby she had a seizure a few hours after being born.  They ended up flying her to an NICU at a major medical center about an hour away (by road).  She was there for two weeks and we were told much the same things you have been told.

Besides meconium aspiration My daughter did have an infection.  For her it was Group B Strep.  Even though my wife had been tested and found negative it seems that the test was faulty and my daughter was born with it.  She needed to be in the NICU for a week and then another week in the normal ward, mostly because she needed a long line IV in to properly deliver antibiotics and that was the only place they could properly administer it.

We had been told by the Dr that she may seem to get worse before she got better but she would get better.  True to his word she was fine.  She just needed time to get that boost from the antibiotics to fight off the infection.

Its understandable that you are worried, I've been there too, but just have faith and be there for your son.  Start advocating for him now and ask questions of the Doctor and keep asking them till you get what you need.  Know though that sometimes they just don't know either but they are working hard to get them.  Also, I know you want guarantees but unfortunately there are none in this life.  Just stay on top of things and have faith that the whole medical staff are doing what they can.

Good luck and God bless to you both.

  6. I hope you get to bring your baby home soon. I hope you have some one to help you get through this
