my sub and amp are 200 rms. seems like that should be loud enough. this is in an extended cab truck, so theres not a lot of cabin space to move around. I have my gain k**b a little less than halfway up. lets say 2/5 of the way up, and the same goes for my bass boost.

The kenwood headunit has a 4 v preout, im just wondering how much can i turn my gain up? i know enough not to turn it up too much at all as im just trying to match the output with the input of the head unit. but it seems like it should be louder.

ive read how to do it, but what normal?

  1. There is a much better way to set the gains, no "by ear" reaquired. i am surprised crutchfield would tell you to set it up that way. the proper way will require a Multimeter, they cost about $20 bucks from radio shack. Then download the chart i linked to below, to get your test tone and the voltage chart.

What you do from there is simply this.

    1. burn the 60Hz test tone to a cd

    2. find the voltage in the chart for 200Watts RMS (4ohm = 28.28Volts) (2ohm = 20 volts)

    3. hook the meter up to the amp (just like a speaker)

    4. play the 60hz test tone

5 adjust the gain until you reach the proper voltage..

    Whala... perfectly set gains.

  2. The amps gain does matter.  If you go over the speaker rating you will blow the. Your speakers in the head unit are the smallest. You want to head the more. Right. I hope you installed speaker control on the front speakers, the head speakers and the rear speakers. If you did not. The turning up the gain will blow the head speakers. With the proper controls you can ajust the amp gain and not hurt the head speakers. Or you have them on another amp.
