Question about my mile time on treadmill.?

I can do a mile in 5:50 in school..But today I ran the mile for the frst time in the treadmill going at 8.5 and 9.0 MPH, and it said I did it at 6:35 and I was tired as heck..What gives?

  1. Running on a track and running on a treadmill are two very different things. On a track you are having to move your whole body whereas on a treadmill you are simply having to lift your legs while the conveyor belt moves in a circle.

    I don't think you will ever get matching times because they are such different forms of running.


  2. Running on a treadmill is a lot different than running on a track.

  3. Treadmills are infamous with runners as being very inaccurate. They can give you readings that are off by up to 30 seconds per mile, and this leads to some people thinking they are faster than they are or slower than they really are.

    Also, while you are at, say level 9.0 on a treadmill, you could be actually running anywhere between a 5:45 mile and a 6:20 mile... they just aren't accurate.

    Also, treadmill running is extremely different than actual running. Different muscles are used.

    One more think: do your workouts on an incline of 1-2%. Its more like outside.
