Ive had my pet rat for about 6 months now, and it seems over time he has gotten much more hyper. he's extremely jumpy, he doesnt sit on my shoulders, he wont let you hold him for to long or anything. he's very friendly and he's never tried to bite me or anything, he just seems like hes on speed 24/7... arent rats supposed to be really tame? is something wrong with him?

  1. lol, my bunny's the exact same way. it sounds fine, just hyper in nature and very curious perhaps. let it run around, so as long as it has supervision and is in no danger, and be sure to let it know that you decide when it gets put back into it's cage, not it, or else it'll think too much of the ower and not wanna go back in it at all, not a good thing, cause it could get hurt. ^_^

best of luck, sounds like a fun little guy, oh, and also, it might need a buddy. rats are very social. ^_^

  2. Although rats have quite similar habits all of them have their own unique personality.  I have had quite a few rats over the years and they were all quite curious and hyper when i first brought them into my home.  He is still getting used to you and his surroundings which can be quite exciting for rats.  Rats are very playful and energetic when they are young and love to roam free and explore outside their cage.  Make sure you take him out regularly and pay him lots of attention, that way he will begin to trust you and will enjoy spending time with you.  Don't  worry male rats tend to be more affectionate and less energetic than females and over time he will become more docile.  Just remember he is in new surroundings and if you got him from a pet shop then he is probably excited that he has so much more free space to run around.  Just make sure your cage is big enough and has some things he can climb and jump on so when he is in there he has allot of space to do exercise and doesn't get bored.

    hope this helps :)

  3. No, this just means that you have a hyperactive rat (cool!)

  4. It sounds like the little fellow is lonely. Rats do like other rats for 24/7 company. I had a rat who was just like yours and kept acting a bit freaky, so i got him another same s*x friend to keep him company and everything has been fine every since.

  5. nothing wrong with him,

    he just wants to play.

    : )
