Why do people think they're so cool?

They can appear as if it was out of nowhere.  They've got smooth moves and kick a*s*s wearing their funky little costumes!  Who wouldn't like em?

Ninjas are not super human or mythological, they are kind of like Batman except they actually existed. They were basically elite assassins in Japan. They are cool because of their incredible skills in martial arts. Ninjas could jump over high obstacles, climb walls with ease, use primitive smoke bombs to make smoke screens, wore black suits, and could kill people with shurikens. That is why ninjas are cool.

People have always liked secret societies,espionage,and the martail arts.

Simply because people only know about their exploits and little to nothing about who they really are...... Ninjas are nothing more then a trained group of assassins, That does a job for money... And each ninja sect has an old woman that is contacted about a job that those that can afford wish done and she passed that info on they never takes side they just do the job they are paid to do and leave.. Now their Ninja training is passed down from father to son or daughter if that is all he has... And during the day they are just farmers, And the farmer in Japan were very poorly treated by everyone else.. They were always looked down on as nothing more than scavengers... And the ninjas were also maligned.... Now do they even exist unto this day yes they do but they were damned near wipe out many times by several ancient war-lords............................

Ninjas were the James Bond, Navy Seals of their day. Their exploits expanded the notion of what could be done on the battlefield, and becuase so much of what they did was shrouded in secrecy, for many obvious purposes, that 'absence' allows alot of romantization and fantasy to overtake the more humdrum, but no less extraordinary, fundamentals of who and what they were.

Also, because ninjitsu encompassed a greater variety of skills than karate or judo (how to strike from hidden places, how to remain unseen throughout the mission, how to kill from a distance) their dramatization in movies was much more open to a dynamic and elaborate interpretation. 2 people who use karate in a movie may kick and punch their way across any number of environments, but get two ninjas fighting it out, and they are much more likely to be running through forests, jumping insane distances, leaping and tumbling all over the place, all the while exchanging one weapon for another from their hidden arsenal, before finally coming down to the dramatic sword-on-sword battle.

The bigger the sandbox, the more castles and towns and sand cars you can make, the cooler your box appears.
