  1. Contraception has been around since ancient times.  Some methods were effective, others weren't.  Some were quite dangerous.  My guess is that there were various methods available then, including what we might consider primitive diaphragms (lemons were used in some areas), abortifacients (certain herbs and preparations), and some good old common sense.  Given that the worlds oldest profession has been at it a long time, there are probably a lot of handed down methods.

In the west, women were in something of a short supply.  Quite likely a spare child or two was not a great impediment to marriage. A "mistake" here or there was probably common.

Tying tubes wasn't such a great idea then without anaesthetic.

In the movies, the women are somewhat exagerated.  In the frontier days, women often died early, many times either from burns or childbirth.

  2. no havent seen it....they tried to abstain during ovulation but it doesnt always work..

  3. I don't know about the 1800's, but i've heard early forms of birth control in some cultures were pretty hideous.

Early condoms were made out of intestines. The same stuff that is still used to may sausage. (i'm a veggy so that's extra sick to me)

Somewhere i heard, women would put crocodile dung up in 'there' as a spermicide.

  4. They might not have prevented it, but it's different from now because you hear about pregnancy a lot more because they are 13 year olds having s*x and people in this age do it more frequently then they had done in the past.

And honestly, back then when people had s*x it was with people they loved and/or were married to, so if they DID get pregnant it wasn't such an issue as it would be now.
