Would painting a bedroom (fairly small, with a sloped ceiling,) one color (the walls and the ceiling) make it depressing and claustrophobic? The color would probably be either dark blue or dark red. thanks!

  1. Dark colors may make the room seem smaller.  If you want to paint a dark color you should make sure you have a lot of natural light, and make any room furnishings (curtains, bed linens, etc) a lighter color.  That should help the mood.

  2. darker colors tend to make rooms look smaller

    go with a lighter color

  3. Painting the room one "light" color would make the room seem larger... a dark color might not be a good idea.   If the room has lots of natural lights.. windows ... skylight a dark color might be good... if you were concerned about a day sleeper... However.... block out shades or drapes would be a better option for a day sleeper...

Think in terms of mirrors and accents and organization/non clutter   to make the room appear larger....

  4. Dark colors will make the room seem SMALLER, but not necessarily claustrophobic--unless you have a problem with small spaces. But if the room is a comfortable room to you now, changing the color of the paint shouldn't make it claustrophobic.  If you actually hate dark red or dark blue, then it might be depressing; but color seems to strike something in a persons emotions, so if you like those colors, then go with them.  Blue tends to soothe most people, and red tends to energize, even in some of the darker shades. The only reason I wouldn't paint a small room in those dark colors is for resale appeal. But if you're going to enjoy the room for at least a couple of years--have it your way!

  5. I work at a  paint store as a side job.  In a small room with insufficient light, darker colors will make the room seem smaller. Doing the ceiling the same color when it's dark will make it seem like your in a box.  Also different times of the day will make the colors look different so if your in a bright paint store make sure you take chips home and tape them on the wall.  See how they look at different times of the day before you make your decision.  Darker colors are generally more expensive so you don't want to make a bad choice.  The Banjamin Moore Aura is a great paint even though it is quite expensive.  Dark colors don't cover well sometimes. It may take up to 5 coats to fully cover. Aura however is self priming and  the most it will take to cover is two coats; that's why its so expensive.
