  1. The white p**p is pretty normal, although should usually be a mixture of white and black.  The parakeet is most likely drinking more water.  Sometimes their stool can be loose, especially if they're eating alot of fruit.  As for their weight, hold the budgie and feel the keel bone, that's the area around their chest.  If the bones are sticking out, the bird is too thin.  If you can hardly feel the bones, the bird is overweight.  In between that is a normal weight bird.  If you really want to be sure, take him to the vet for an exam.  About the hand thing, not all budgies will take to your hand.  I've got mine trained to go on my finger, but none of them wants to stay there.  I've had some parakeets who would sit on my finger for a long time.  They are all different and they need to be accepted for who they are.  Flying at night?  Do you cover the cage?  Are their wings clipped?  If not, cover the cage and get their wings clipped.  That should help solve the problem.  A good magazine I can recommend for you is BirdTalk.  I subscribe to it and they have some great information inside about all kinds of birds.  You can get the subscription online or buy the magazine at the store.  The local petshops usually always have some on hand.  Hope that helps.  Best of luck to you.  Just remember, love your bird for who it is not who you want it to be.  They are all very unique.

  2. The poops have 3 different parts, the white, which I think is urine, the green, which is solid waste and a bit of watery stuff, to help it slide out, I am guessing  :)

Well, if you could touch your bird, lol, you can tell by the keel, feeling the bone that runs down the front part of the body, it's like a dogs spine, you can feel a ridge there, if it is sharp and bony, then they are underweight, if you can't feel it real well, they are fat, and if it's there, but a bit meaty, they are just right.

Otherwise, if your bird is moving around well, singing and acting happy, I would guess that he is fine.

To make them tamer, try offering food from your hand, if they won't take it from your finger tips, try the palm of your hand. Try to be very still and you must be very patient.

If you can get the bird OUT of the cage, and onto a basket or some other bird safe surface with a perch for him to sit on, he will not feel as territorial and may be more receptive to your advances.

Do you cover them at night? Something, even just a shadow can scare them and give them 'night terrors'. A nightlight can help, make sure the curtains are closed up tight so no outside movement can send a shadow in to scare them, and the cage cover is pulled back a bit so they can see that it is not a cat or something stalking them.

The only way to prevent the flying away is to clip them. If you have a cat in the house, do not clip them, please.

Animals have the fight or flight instinct. If he is scared, he will fly, if he can't fly, he just might bite, and you don't want him to start biting!

Just go slow and keep working with him.

Oh, and if you have more than one bird... seperate them!!! Your birds, esp small birds, will bond one to another. When it is just you and one bird, YOU become his flock, and he will (eventually) look to you for companionship.

You want the other bird(s) out of earshot, even if you have to take the birds to another home, if you want to be sucessful, your bird should not see or hear another bird until he is good and tame.

  3. It is normal to have some white in it.

If they are under weight you will be able to feel their breastbone.

When trying to train them take them one at a time into like the bathroom put it on the floor sit down and work with it that way(close the toilet)

At night if you cover them don't cover them completly they may have night frights.

The only way to tame them realy fast have them cliped it is safer for them and makes it easy for you to work with them it is like you getting a hair cut (don't hurt at all).

  4. Bird p**p should be a dark shade of green with a dot of white. The shade of the green part of the p**p will get lighter if  you feed your bird green vegetables like peas or a lot of bread. If this happens give the bird stress formula for keets. Please, Follow directions on the can.

If your birds p**p is completely white:

Your bird is using cuttle bone for grit remove the cuttle bone and only give it back when you can monitor how much he eats. It will take a few days of the bird drinking water to remove cuttlebone powder from his crop and digestive system.  Do not give your birds grit it is not needed for a bird to digest his food and can get stuck in his intestines if he swallows it and the bird can get very ill and die.

A vet can accurately tell you about a good weight for your bird.He will measure your birds length, width and height and ask you about how active the bird is and how old the bird is. He will also examine the birds breastbone and feel for muscle and fat.

A good way to teach them to go on to the palm of your hand  is to bribe them with millet. Give them a taste of millet then place the millet spray (a small piece) between your fingers far enough away so they have to step on your fingers to get the millet. After a couple of days place the millet closer to the palm of your hand. Once they associate your hand with millet which is like candy to birds they will trust you and feel safer. If you want them to step up on your finger place your finger under the bird by his feet with your other hand show him the millet and say step up if he doesn't do  it move the millet closer to his head but just out of reach and repeat the step up command he should step up on your finger praise him and then give him a bite of millet. Keep practicing and he will do it without millet.

Night frights are similar to you having a bad dream.

Birds can hear what people cannot and in the wild strange sounds mean danger. Make sure your birds have a wall behind them so they will feel safe. Do not open the cage because they are still half asleep and will panic and get hurt if let out. turn the light on and show them and tell them there is nothing to be afraid of.  I find it helps to keep a night light on so they can see just enogh to get around because birds do not watch where they are going and a missed step by one bird will set everyone in a panic. It is also helpful  to have a flat area where your birds can rest there feet when they get tired of holding on to a perch.

Trying to tame 2 or more birds at the same together is difficult. You will have to seperate them when you want to teach them. Take one bird and place it in a smaller cage with no toys and bring the bird into a seperate, safe and quite room and spend 15 minutes to half an hour with it and practice the trick you want to teach it . Praise and reward your bird and never scold him for not doing what you say.  Then take him back and take the other bird and start teaching it the same tricks. By seperateing the birds you are giving each one special time with you and it should make it easier for you to teach them.

Just remember it takes practice and patience to teach and birds are like people some are easier to teach than others .If you give up they will give up. I hope my suggestions help.

  5. 1. The p**p shouldn't all be white. It should have a color on the outer ring like, black, brown, and/or green, and should be white in the inner ring. Make sure the p**p isn't runny. If it is, that's okay as long as it's not runny everyday.

    2. You can't tell, unles you put them on a scale. Oh and you can also touch the tommy and check. Make sure it's not straight, make sure it's round. As long as your parakeet is eating, he/she will be fine. Make sure you don't feed these bad ingredeints like, Ethoxyquin, BHA, and BHT. I suggest you buy the food called 'Fiesta' it has nothing bad in it, and it's healthy. Or you can go buy Organic pellets (your keet will live longer).

    3. Make sure you've had them at least for a week. If you have more than one bird, i suggest you teach them in seprate rooms when your teaching them the 'step up' signal. To do this, you need to have the bird outside of the cage (make sure the room is safe) you can also have it inside the cage. You can either just push on it's tommy and say 'step up' and if it climbs up, and then back down, give him/her a treat. If you can't feed them, then you should try doing that first.

    4. My birds do the same, and so everytime i would have to turn on the light and put them back on the perch, but the more i do this, the more they keep climbing the cage. Their trying to tell you to keep the light on. So, to teach them to sleep at night is, to not pay any attention. Just let them settle in, but in some cases they might be terrified of something in there or something moving outside, or noises. They will evently overcome this. It's natural, espacially if you bought them in a store. At the store they keep the light on 24/7.

Try feeding them, once you can do this simple step, you will be able to teach them tricks, tons and tons. For more advice go to this website www.birdtricks.com it's really helpful, and if you sign up, they will send you e-mails every week/month and keep you updated. Good Luck.

  6. i always leave some light on at noght so they dont get scared at night.  and since you talkin about them i assume you have more than one so to answer your question about how can you make them tame.    :( you wont  im sorry . as long as they have company of another bird there they will never be as tame but they will still be interesting and fun to watch.

I let mine 4 fly around all day and they really dont pay any attention to me but i still love them. I let them be them :)

    Good luck
