What technique am I using (apart from alliteration) when I write:

The dawn of darkness

  1. I suppose that would be the use of an "oxymoron", where something is described in a way opposite to its actual nature, for the sake of an effect of contrast....  like if I said "Their combined silence was deafening" to describe how a crowd's silence was all a performer could think about in that moment - you are describing darkness with a word that can only be truly applied to the opposite of darkness: light.
