Question about police officer hiring..

Ok I have had a history of anxiety and depression. Was on several medications throughout my life. Now I don't take any medications and feel just fine. Would it be a waste of my time to try? Can they judge you on that when they hire? Please only people who are familiar with this type of question. Thanks would appreciate any help.

  1. That's going to depend solely on the medical and psychological evaluation/testing portion of your application process. While each agency has some flexibility, they still have to meet the state's minimum POST (Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) requirements. That'll vary from state to state.

Your best option is to contact several agencies in your state to get an idea. You might be able to get an answer from POST in your state - but they only provide the minimum requirements. I would expect that you would have less of an issue the longer it's been since being on meds.

    Good luck,

    Calif Deputy

  2. Your past medical records are protected by HIPPA, and will not be examined.

They will send you for medical and psychological testing. If you pass both, you should be fine.
