Is there such thing as an "officer" who can do detective work (investigating etc.) and at the same time do all those usual stuff like apprehend bad guys and make rounds around the city without wearing the blue uniform? [Like maybe in casual clothes...]

Thanks :D

  1. yes they are called CID and they are the same as policemen but without the uniform

  2. I believe they always address them as Detective. Since it's their rank.

  3. They're all "officers," in that they (in the U.S.) are peace officers. The rest varies. Detective may be just an assignment, with detectives holding various ranks, sgt. lt., etc. In some agencies, it's considered a rank. In some, some detectives are uniformed and patrol, working on particular kinds of responses or responding to investigate and routinely respond as patrol officers when needed. In others, they wear civilian clothes. In some small agencies, there are no officers assigned exclusively as detectives, and investigations are conducted by uniformed officers. Some agencies do not use "detective" as a rank or assignment and substitute "investigator." And some officers may work in special plain clothes units without being what you think of as detectives.

  4. Good question: and the answer is yes.

For example: San Antonio PD (Texas) has officers that are given investigator rank, but wear a similar police uniform and respond to crimes to collect evidence.  The other type of investigator (same rank) is a plain clothes officer who investigates case crimes.  It all depends in what office you are in at the time.
