Question:

Question about removing carpet?

My mom's basement recently flooded and now she wants me to remove part of her carpet. She claims that the only tool I'll need is a razor knife. It's basically just a carpet laid over the cement basement floor. I don't know whether the installer attached it to the floor with an adhesive substance of some sort. I doubt it, personally. I have to remove the section of the carpet that is soaked. So, will a razor knife suffice? Or, do I need a stronger cutting implement?

  1. Razor knife will work fine.  If you have a long board or strip of wood you will get a straighter line if needed.  Be careful with the razor knife.

  2. since carpet on concrete cannot use tack strips, it is probably glued down.  even if the glue's hold failed with the water damage, you will still have to remove it before laying more carpet.  use a scrapper for that.
