What is the main difference between the two? I'm guessing the plunge is more diverse simply because of the price, but what makes the two so different?

  1. a plunge router allows you to make multi depth cuts quickly and allows you to do plunge cuts (mortice's for locks etc) on the move without having to stop. whereas a fixed base router would normally be set up and used for repetitive cutting at a predetermined depth.
