Question:

Question about running Internet through two computers in same house?

Well, my family computer is downstairs, and that is the only computer in our house with Internet connection (actually, it's the only computer in our house). I would really like to be able to have it in my room, which is upstairs, but I don't know how. I was wondering: can anyone tell me if I can and how to get the Internet to work in a room upstairs using the same connection? Or provide a link that would tell me how?

Thanks, all help is appreciated.

  1. If its DSL or Dial up, all you have to do is plug your modem into the phone line or the phone splitter that comes with the DSL.

I'm not sure how cable would work, But a wireless router is a good idea, but make sure you use your network key and make it secure so no one else can connect wirelessly and make your connection slower.

  2. If you have dial-up just install the dial-up software on your other computer(s) and only one can connect at a time.

    If you have broadband:

If you already have a router (or it's built into the modem) you just need a wireless access point (assuming it's not built-in) and a wifi card/USB adapter (assuming your computer doesn't already have one)

If your "modem" has 4-5 computer ports and/or an antenna on it then it probably has a router.  If it only has the one port (where your current computer is connected) then you need a router.  I like the Belkin 54G wireless router because it's the cheapest I've found ($39) and works great.  It also comes with a setup CD that guides you through every step of plugging things in.

  3. yep get a wireless router they come with instructions on how to set it up. thats it just get it connected and usually laptops come with a wireless card internally anyways good luck have fun.

  4. Best and easiest option is to get a wireless router and then get a wireless card for your computer. It may cost a little money but its well worth it.

  5. This really depends on what your current Internet connection is.  If you have dial up, then it can be done, but isn't really practical so I'll skip that option.  If you have DSL, cable, or FiOS, they all have a modem.  What you'll do is purchase a wireless router that connects to the modem and shares the modem between multiple computers (either wired or wireless).  When you purchase a second computer, make sure it has wireless capabilities (most laptops will have this by default, if a desktop, you'll need to buy a wireless PCI card).  At that point, you're following configuration instructions for the wireless router to configure the network for your house.
