Question about running races and times...?

My 9 year old just won the annual Road Run race at his school Friday. He completed the 2 mile course in 14:11. That is awesome to me, but I am "the momma" and am therefore somewhat biased! Is this an impressive time? Should I encourage him to keep up with it?

  1. Yes, but do NOT push him to get times.  Encourage him to run, but don't start training him hard or try to make him a world champion.  Too many times parents push their children to the point where they don't want to run any  more.  Just allow him to keep running at his own pace, he's still young.

  2. that is an amazing time for a 9 year old, and OF COURSE encourage him to EXERCISE, but please dont over train him or push him to run so fast/much at such a young age. he can train harder in high school if he enjoys running

  3. thats good for the 9 year olds where i live

  4. It's a pretty good time. He should continue, as he must be in about 3rd grade being able to do two miles at a 7:05.5 pace. That's quite good for his age. In one way to think of it, if he starts training somewhat now, he could be quite good as he grows older. He might not enjoy the fact that you might tell him to train though. However, don't use the word train and stuff yet. Just have him run for fun, and he might decide he wants to run for his times on his own. Besides, you most likely wouldn't want to send him out running alone at his age. Maybe you could have you or one of your family run with him (for pleasure, and at any pace), or find somebody he can run with.

  5. don't push him...but that is a great time! congrats!

  6. I run track and cross country at my high school.  I think that if my parents would have started me running any earlier, I would of ended up completely burnt out.  I would of gotten so sick of it.  I think it has to be something you want to do, and chances are if your son feels he is good at it, he'll continue to pursue it.  Just let him feel the need to work harder, and let him work at it because he wants to.  I would however definately encourage him to continue, because it sounds like he has a lot of natural ability!
